🚀 Investment in early-stage Spanish technology companies reached new heights in 2023, exceeding 1 billion euros, according to the Spanish Tech Ecosystem Report 2024 by GoHub Ventures. 📈 Venture capital investment in Spain's tech sector has stabilized, returning to pre-pandemic trends. Following the slowdown in 2020 and the subsequent liquidity-driven surge, investment levels now surpass those of 2019. Spanish startups raised 2.2 billion euros across over 850 funding rounds in 2023. 🌟Early-stage rounds, those raising up to 15 million euros, attracted the most capital. Pre-seed (up to 1 million), seed (up to 4 million), and series A (up to 15 million) rounds collectively exceeded 1 billion euros in 2023, matching 2021 and surpassing 2022. 🌍The report ranks Spain seventh in Europe for venture capital investment. In early-stage investment, Spain ranks fourth. It also ranks fourth in the number of funding rounds. Regarding exits of over one billion dollars, Spain is seventh in Europe, with eighteen unicorn-status companies. 💻 In 2023, 47% of VC-backed investments in Spain went to SaaS (Software as a Service) companies, reflecting a global trend. SaaS has overtaken marketplaces and e-commerce as the leading business model in Spain for the past two years, indicating the maturity of the Spanish tech industry. 🌿 Climate tech and digital health companies saw significant VC fundraising in 2023, attracting 404 million euros and 226 million euros, respectively. Additionally, the Spanish startup ecosystem's maturity is evident in the emergence of a new generation of founders with experience from unicorn companies like Glovo, Cabify, Jobandtalent, Fever, Wallbox, TravelPerk, and Factorial. Over ninety entrepreneurs from these companies participated in funding rounds in 2023. The startup ecosystem in the Iberian Peninsula — the region encompassing Spain and Portugal — has been on a roll the last couple of years. The value of Spanish startups surpassed €100 billion in 2023, according to Dealroom data, with venture investment of €2.2 billion across some 850 rounds. Meanwhile, Portugal has produced a slew of VC firms such as Shilling, Indico, Armilar, Bynd, and more. Lisbon-based venture firm Faber has become the latest to double down on the region — it recently launched its third fund, marking a first close of €31 million (about $33.9 million). The fund is anchored by the European Investment Fund (EIF) and has received major contributions from the NATO Innovation Fund and Portugal’s Caixa Capital, as well as family offices. It’s aiming to raise €60 million (about $64.2 million) in total. The new fund, titled Faber Tech Fund III, will target pre-seed and seed-stage startups in deep tech, AI, robotics, and biotech across Portugal, Spain, and the Netherlands.

🚨 Carles Ferrer Roqueta has been managing venture capital funds since 2000 and today he is a general partner at Nauta. He talks to Sam Shead for VC Wednesdays, a weekly series featuring a Q&A interview with a venture capitalist. 🖊️  Where do you see the greatest opportunities in 2025? It will be no surprise to hear that artificial intelligence is the most active opportunity. But we hold capital efficiency as a core tenet of Nauta’s investment thesis, so we’re most excited by the top of the AI stack, not lower-level infrastructure (hardware or cloud) or foundational models (OpenAI, Anthropic) which require huge funding and can be commoditised very quickly. We’re excited by AI opportunities like model supervision and vector databases. We also like AI-enabled horizontal and vertical apps like coding co-pilots or travel assistants, capital light with huge potential. We’re firm believers in "traditional software" (thankfully less-hyped). Valuations here were hammered in 2022 but a lot of founders got the message from investors that want sustainability/profitability, rather than growth at all costs. 🖊️ Any areas that you think are massively overhyped that you’ll be steering clear of? Firstly, it is refreshing that the answer is not "everything", which is how the market felt in 2021. The area with unparalleled excitement is AI and the clearest area of AI which is overhyped is the foundational models. As I’ve said, the capital intensity is so high, and the product is so quick to be commoditised and so a lot of people burned out there. Some will become platform owners but ultimately, AI adoption by enterprises across all industries is still in single or low double-digit percentages. AI might eventually change every job, but it won’t be at the speed that people are predicting, and the leaders will take time to build. Amazon built an empire across e-commerce over decades and a lot of tech built in the 2000s has only started to be truly relevant now. A lot of AI being built now might not make sense for 25 years. 🖊️ Other than saying no to founders, what’s the most difficult aspect of being a VC? Oversimplification of the VC life cycle is a common pitfall of a general partner. There are four area which are crucial to success: (i) defining a distinctive investment thesis; (ii) raising a fund based on that thesis; (iii) investing with the discipline needed to apply the thesis regardless of hype and depressed cycles; (iv) and the art of supporting companies as they position themselves for the right growth journey and exit. Doing this sequentially and over different cycles is a huge challenge and can only be achieved with investment discipline and an amazing portfolio. #VCWednesdays #vc #venturecapital #startups #TechonLinkedIn

Zehnder Group International AG, a global leader in indoor climate solutions, has acquired the Catalan Grupo Siber from its founding partner, Toni Nicolas Salame, and majority shareholder, Quarza Inversiones. This acquisition is part of Zehnder’s strategy to expand its presence in the residential and light commercial ventilation market, with a focus on double-digit growth. Grupo Siber, known for its high-quality, energy-efficient ventilation solutions for residential markets in Spain and Portugal, will enhance Zehnder’s regional business. Matthias Huenerwadel, CEO of the Swiss group, welcomed the acquisition, highlighting the complementary nature of the two companies’ products and market strengths.
